<image:title>About Osteopathy - OSTEOPATHY</image:title>
<image:caption>Osteopathy is an AHPRA recognised system of manual therapies that recognise the important link between the body’s structure and the way it functions. Osteopaths focus on how a person’s joints, muscles, nerves, circulation, connective tissues and organ systems interact and function as a holistic unit Our clinicians use a range of hands-on approaches, including soft tissue work, joint mobilisation and manipulation approaches, various stretching and myofascial techniques alongside dry needling, sports taping, exercise and postural advice and ergonomic instruction. By incorporating a holistic approach of diagnosis and treatment, our caring clinicians will address your pain, movement restriction and dysfunction in your body that are associated with your complaint. Osteopaths are government registered primary health care practitioners who have completed a minimum of four years of study incorporating an undergraduate clinical science qualification, followed by a graduate Masters clinical program. Osteopaths are trained to perform examinations of the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous systems. Osteopaths must also meet high professional standards and complete annual professional development education. We provide expert treatment and advice to people of all ages from newborns to the elderly and everyone in between offering many different services, tailored to suit your individual needs. <image:title>About Pregnancy Massage - REMEDIAL PREgnancy MASSAGE</image:title>
<image:caption>Pregnancy is a hugely exciting time, but it can also take its toll on the body and mind. It is an increasingly popular remedy for women who are eager to keep tension, stress and pain at bay during pregnancy. If you’re expecting, and you’re wondering if booking a remedial massage could benefit you, here’s a handy guide to pregnancy massage. What is Pregnancy Massage? Pregnancy massage, as the name suggests, is a form of massage therapy designed specifically to benefit pregnant women. Massage therapists use movements and actions that target common problems experienced by pregnant women focusing on a holistic approach, which champions mental and physical health. For many women it can provide curative benefits, especially for those struggling with pain or discomfort. The benefits of Pregnancy Massage It’s very common for pregnant women to suffer from pain, particularly in the back and shoulders, and hormonal changes can also cause fluid build-ups, swelling, stiffness, and sleeping troubles. Massage is an effective, natural, holistic solution to many of these ailments. The main benefits of massage for pregnant women include: Reducing stress and anxiety While many women enjoy being pregnant, and it’s a very exciting time, it can also be nerve-wracking. If you’re expecting for the first time, or you’ve had problems or complications during a previous pregnancy, you may be prone to stress and anxiety. Massage can help to facilitate calm and relaxation, reducing anxiety and eliminating the risk of side-effects, including heartburn and insomnia. Combating back pain The excess weight your body carries when you’re pregnant can elevate the occurrence of back pain. Back pain and pelvic girdle pain is one of the most common complaints during pregnancy. Massage targets pressure points, releasing tension and loosening up the muscles. In some cases, pregnancy can increase the risk of sciatic pain or sciatica. If you have sciatica, gentle massage can help to alleviate discomfort by releasing the muscular tension around the nerve. Headaches If you’re prone to headaches, coping with pain during pregnancy can be difficult. Massage therapy can provide a natural alternative, releasing tension in the muscles in the neck and shoulders, improving posture, and helping to make you feel calmer. Hormonal Changes During pregnancy women experience significant hormonal changes in the body, and this can result in a wide range of symptoms. Research published by the American Massage Association suggests that regular massages during pregnancy can help to stabilise hormone levels, particularly cortisol and norepinephrine, which are known to increase stress levels. Increased relaxin can also contribute to lengthened ligamentous tissue and subsequent pain, massage can balance areas of the body by decreasing muscular tension. Pregnancy massage is recommended from 12 weeks onwards. All of our therapists are able to provide pregnancy remedial massage and gift vouchers for pregnancy massage can be purchased in ours clinics or on our website HERE.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Myotherapy - Myotherapy</image:title>
<image:caption>Myotherapy is a form of manual therapy which uses evidence-based assessment, treatment and rehabilitation techniques to treat neuromusculoskeletal (nerve, muscle and joint) pain and dysfunction. Myotherapists use an integrative approach to treatment, to discover and treat the cause of a clients’ pain, and to also identify and address any contributing factors. We identify the signs and symptoms of conditions which may be contributing to your pain, to best understand you, your health history and your needs. Additionally, identifying if you could benefit from treatment of other modalities, providing a holistic approach to client care and treatment. Our therapists use a wide range of assessment and treatment techniques in order to deliver accurate and effective treatment to all clients. Applying more hands-on techniques such as myofascial release/cupping, joint mobilisations, nerve manipulation, trigger point therapy, and dry needling or electrotherapeutic dry needling. They also have a strong focus on corrective/rehabilitative exercise prescription and education to ensure you as the client have an understanding of the mechanisms behind your presenting condition, and can work on preventing any future injuries. The ratio of assessment to treatment time is greater for Myotherapy, as a thorough assessment leads to more effective, accurate and efficient treatment. Each consultation will begin with a comprehensive health history screening and a detailed postural, joint, movement and pain assessment, where applicable. From here, relevant special tests may be carried out and also functional tests to assess the impact your pain/condition has on the physical demands of your daily living and functional needs. The aim of your initial appointment will be to alleviate pain and identify the structures or movement dysfunction needing to be addressed in order to restore the body back to optimal function. From here practitioners will develop an on-going treatment plan which typically consists of corrective exercises to assist in preventing re-occurrence of injury. Follow-up sessions may be requested where the practitioner can further monitor your progress and adjust any exercises that have been prescribed. As described by Endeavour College.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Myofascial Cupping - Myofascial cupping</image:title>
<image:caption>Myofascial cupping is a negative pressure soft tissue treatment technique utilised to manipulate the skin and fascial tissue. Using suction, the cups have the ability to grab and lift the fascia that may allow for lymphatic drainage of toxins, as well as stretching the fascial tissue to increase mobilisation. It is suggested that by using the appropriate cup size for the anatomical area being treated, there can be some relief of a deep fascial adhesion and allow for the muscle alone to move free of restriction. Recently researchers have found that cupping therapy could alter skin blood flow, change the biomechanical properties of the skin, increase pressure pain thresholds and reduce inflammation.1 This technique is used in conjunction with your remedial massage, myotherapy or osteopathic treatment to enhance mobility, and decrease restriction. In myofascial cupping, the aim is not to create bruising as often seen in traditional cupping, in fact the opposite effect is created by moving the cups during the treatment to allow increased blood flow to stagnant areas and allow fresh oxygenated blood to enter the tissues. 1.Warren, A. <image:title>About Remedial Massage - REMEDIAL MASSAGE</image:title>
<image:caption>Remedial Massage is a form of deep tissue massage which is focused on regaining functional muscle tone and soft tissue flexibility to assist recovery from or to help prevent injury. This form of massage works by increasing blood flow to the tissues, removal of stagnant toxic fluids, and encouraging lymphatic drainage. The effect of this is normalised soft tissue flexibility and thus improved joint mobility and removing restrictions. Soft tissue tension affects the normal position of the joints and associated nerve tissue. Therefore it is often involved in movement imbalances, postural dysfunctions and is almost always a contributing factor in musculoskeletal pain. This type of massage is ideal for sports people, chronic pain syndromes, injuries and those with severe muscle tension. One or more of the following techniques/styles may be used during your session: Remedial Deep Tissue Sports Swedish/Relaxation Pregnancy and Postnatal Dry Needling Trigger Point Therapy Taping You can purchase gift vouchers for massage in our clinics or on our website HERE.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Strapping and Taping - strapping and taping</image:title>
<image:caption>At Northern Rivers Health we work alongside many athletes and sporting teams, using kinesiology tape as part of increasing their sports performance, rehabilitation and injury prevention. However, taping can be used in many different situations such as during pregnancy to take the pressure off the pelvic ligaments, low back pain, carpal tunnel, swollen ankles and postural complaints to allow someone to recognise correct postural patterns etc. RockTape can be used in a variety of ways to achieve different benefits: When RockTape is applied with little or no stretch on the tape but lots of stretch on the tissue it causes the skin to form convulsions and wrinkle. This creates a bio-mechanical lifting mechanism that decompresses the tissue just under the skin. It is believed that this decompression and having tape on our skin creates 3 main effects: • Fluid Effect: By causing decompression the tape promotes a more normal fluid dynamic in the taped area. Swelling is better able to flow out of the area, taking with it toxins which result from inflammation and injury. Also blood has less resistance to enter the area bringing with it more oxygen and nutrients vital for healing and recovery. This fluid effect is probably behind the dramatic improvement in swollen and bruised tissue that is often seen when Rocktape is applied. • Mechanical Effect: As pressure on the vertical layer cake of tissue between skin and bone is reduced more normal slide and glide mechanics between the layers of tissue is restored. It is likely that this is the mechanism that can make someone who can only bend as far as their knees touch their toes in an instant! • Neurological Effect: A lot of pain generated by movement or muscle contraction is generated by nerve endings in the space between the skin and muscle. As tape decompresses this space there is less pressure on these nerve endings so pain is reduced or stopped completely at its source. Having elastic tape stuck to your skin is also believed to stimulate receptors within the skin called Mechanoreceptors. These receptors play a part in our movement awareness, or what therapists call Proprioception. Many therapists believe that one of the main effects of applying ROCKTAPE is to improve our Proprioception, which can both decrease pain and improve the way we move. When Rocktape is applied with more stretch it can be used to support areas where tissue has been strained, torn, weakened or lengthened. By adding more elastic recoil to the taped area, functional stability and tissue ‘snapback’ are enhanced. Our osteopaths are also proficient in rigid taping when it is found to be more beneficial. Taping is part of an osteopathic treatment.</image:caption>

Not only can we treat the symptoms of headaches, back and neck pain, repetitive strain injury in the wrist and hand etc, we can also look at what is the cause of the problem, most often an ergonomic related issue i.e. desk or chair height, repetitive use of one side of the body etc, for a large percentage of desk workers and students. Offering onsite assessments in your workplace and more recently zoom assessments, we offer both short assessments with a brief summary of our findings and suggestions through to a detailed assessment with very specific recommendations, images and a full report of required alterations. This can be conducted as an independent assessment, or in many cases is done as an adjunct to your osteopathic treatment.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Massage Style: Firm to very firm remedial style with the combination of myofascial cupping. After living in Europe, dedicated to Arts and Graphic design, and having published many Arts & Crafts children books, Marta started her journey as a massage therapist. Studying Traditional Thai Massage and Tok Sen in Chiang Mai, she found that body work was what she wanted to be dedicated to. She enrolled to study the Remedial Massage Diploma and making the art of massage her new profession. She has also been dedicated to the yoga path, practicing yoga for more than 20 years and having completed teacher training in Hatha and Kundalini yoga over 2 years ago in Barcelona, her home town. As a massage therapist her intention is to assist your body to return to a sense of freedom and ease. This can only be achieved when your structural and energetic bodies are in balance. She employs relaxation, deep tissue and remedial massage techniques, as well as traditional Thai massage in her work, also cupping & dry needling when required. Each massage is specific to the client's needs and will allow you to release any unnecessary holding on of muscles. Through mindful bodywork, you will find and rest in the stillness of your own centre. Massage is perhaps the oldest form of medicine for it's ability to heal and balance our energy. With a focused intention you can change physical, mental and emotional patterns to feel more liberated, honouring the opportunity that life is constantly offering us, to grow and develop in a healthy way.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Dry Needling - dry needling</image:title>
<image:caption>Dry Needling involves multiple advances of an acupuncture needle into the muscle in the region of a ‘Trigger Point’. The aim of dry needling is to achieve a local twitch response to release muscle tension and pain and is an effective treatment for musculoskeletal pain. The needle used is very thin and most patients do not even feel it penetrate the skin. A healthy muscle feels very little discomfort with insertion of this needle, however if the muscle is sensitive and shortened or has active trigger points within it, the subject will feel a sensation like a muscle cramp -'the twitch response'. Patients soon learn to recognise and even welcome this sensation as it results in deactivating the trigger point, reducing pain and restoring normal length function to the involved muscle. It is not the same as acupuncture that works on the energy meridians of the body, dry needling is primarily focused on musculoskeletal injuries, and as such often accompanies an osteopathy, myotherapy or remedial massage session rather than being utilised alone.</image:caption>

Amy Wilkinson is a Naturopath, Remedial Massage Therapist and Craniosacral Therapist who has been in practice since 2005. As a Naturopath she focuses on interpreting pathology reports and considers it a super power as it allows her a unique an effective way to look inside the body and see problems before they develop. A standard blood test from the doctor provides a wealth of information about the state of health and functionality of your body. She frequently sees clients who have been told that there is “nothing wrong” with their bloods yet they are still unwell. If you examine the bloods from a perspective of optimal health and function rather than looking for the presence of a disease, you find many answers. Working with Thyroid disorders and auto-immune conditions are two areas of special interest, however she has treated all types of people with all types of health complaints. Amy has completed two masterclasses in Pathology Interpretation and Diagnostics and another in Thyroid and Adrenal Diagnostics. As a Remedial Massage Therapist, she is known for her firm, thorough and intuitive treatments. Amy loves Craniosacral Therapy as a deeply relaxing and transformative therapy. It is her favourite modality for creating profound and lasting change. It is especially good for migraines, jaw problems, vertigo and chronic low back pain. She is experienced in treating vertigo which she finds very rewarding as most people have been told there is no treatment and they have to live with this debilitating condition (which they don’t!).</image:caption>

<image:title>About Naturopathy - NATUROPATHY</image:title>
<image:caption>Naturopathy is a natural medicine practice that recognises the body’s inherent ability to heal itself. A naturopath uses dietary changes, lifestyle advice, and herbal or nutritional supplementation to support these natural processes. To understand what each person needs, a naturopath will ask numerous questions around specific health complaints (e.g. headaches, eczema) as well as general body systems (e.g. digestion, immune function). They will also check physical parameters, such as blood pressure, and review pathology or medical testing if available. Naturopathic treatment aims to relieve symptoms and/or specific complaints, while also preventing further ill health, by strengthening the body’s natural healing abilities. Individualised treatment is a key tenet of naturopathy, as no two people are the same, and recommendations are tailored to the needs of each person. When illness strikes – as it does for everyone – effective treatments can be devised that will address both presenting symptoms and the underlying cause. Naturopaths look at all factors that may be impacting on a person’s health and wellbeing. This can include physical health, mental health, emotional wellbeing, genetic tendencies, environmental influences, and dietary intake. Naturopathy can be used to help with a variety of conditions, including the following: ・Digestive complaints such as reflux, bloating, pain, flatulence, constipation and diarrhoea ・Stress, anxiety and mood disorders ・Energy and fatigue ・Cognitive issues including poor memory and recurrent headaches ・Immune challenges, including recurrent infections, allergies and autoimmune conditions ・Respiratory conditions including sore throats, coughs and colds, asthma, bronchitis, tonsillitis, rhinitis, and sinusitis ・Cardiovascular issues, such as high blood pressure and atherosclerosis ・Skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis and acne ・Menstrual complaints such as PMS, irregular cycles, pain and heavy bleeding ・Fertility support and preconception care ・Pregnancy, breastfeeding and postpartum care ・Menopause, andropause and healthy ageing</image:caption>

<image:title>About Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy - DECONGESTIVE LYMPHATIC THERAPY</image:title>
<image:caption>What is Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy? Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy (DLT) is the gold standard treatment designed to manage lymphoedema, a condition characterised by swelling due to the accumulation of lymphatic fluid. DLT aims to reduce swelling, improve lymphatic flow, and restore function by combining several therapeutic techniques. The Key components of DLT include: · Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): A gentle, hands-on massage technique that stimulates the lymphatic system and encourages fluid movement away from swollen areas. · Compression Garments & Therapy: The use of bandages or specialised garments to help prevent fluid build-up and maintain the effects of MLD. · Exercise: Simple, targeted movements to improve lymphatic flow and maintain joint mobility. · Skin Care: Guidance on maintaining healthy skin to reduce the risk of infection, which is higher in people with lymphoedema. Who Would Benefit from Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy? DLT is primarily recommended for individuals experiencing lymphoedema, which may result from a range of causes such as cancer treatment (particularly after lymph node removal or radiation), trauma, surgery, infection, or genetic predisposition. Those who may benefit include: · Cancer Survivors: Especially those who have undergone surgery or radiation affecting the lymph nodes, such as breast, prostate, or melanoma patients. · Individuals with Chronic Swelling: People with persistent swelling in the arms, legs, or other areas not relieved by standard treatments. · Post-Surgical Patients: Those recovering from procedures that disrupt normal lymphatic drainage. · People with Primary Lymphoedema: Individuals with congenital or hereditary lymphatic dysfunction. · Those at Risk of Infection: Since lymphoedema increases infection risk, DLT can help manage and prevent complications like cellulitis. · Those with Lipoedema :DLT can help to ease the symptoms associated with pain and chronic inflammation .</image:caption>

<image:title>About Craniosacral Massage - REMEDIAL PREgnancy MASSAGE</image:title>

<image:title>About Craniosacral Therapy - CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY</image:title>
<image:caption>Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Using a soft touch generally no greater than 5 grams, or about the weight of a nickel, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system, which has been shown to improve the functioning of the central nervous system, as well as many other systems of the body, such as digestive, musculoskeletal, respiratory, circulatory, and more. CST has also been shown to help with the physical components related to such somatic conditions as Post Traumatic Stress, depression and anxiety. By facilitating the body's natural and innate healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and has been shown to be beneficial for people seeking help with a wide range of healthcare challenges and symptoms including: Migraines, Headaches Chronic Pain Motor-Coordination Impairments Central Nervous System Disorders Orthopedic Problems Concussions and an Integrative Approach Scoliosis Conception, Birth Pediatric Challenges Learning Differences, ADD, ADHD Autism and Sensory Processing Chronic Fatigue Emotional Difficulties, Depression Stress and Tension-Related Problems Fibromyalgia and other Connective-Tissue Disorders Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ) Immune Disorders Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Post-Surgical Dysfunction Sleep Challenges You can book in with Amy Wilkinson for those 16 years and older and with osteopath, Grant Sinclair for paediatrics. <image:title>About Food Intolerance Testing - FOOD INTOLERANCE TESTING</image:title>
<image:caption>A food intolerance (as opposed to an allergy) is an immune system reaction to food(s) that is delayed or cumulative. This means that reactions don’t occur immediately after eating the food, it can be several hours later, or, you don’t react every time you eat the food, it might take repeated exposures to trigger a reaction. This makes it hard to identify food intolerances by doing food eliminations. The Food Detective test uses a fresh blood sample obtained with a finger prick and is processed immediately in clinic. Fresh blood gives more accurate results. It tests your immune reaction to 56 commonly consumed foods by checking which foods trigger an IgG inflammatory response from your blood sample. You will be given a report of the outcomes of your intolerance test and advice on how to move forward with these findings, individualised for you personally. Depending on the strength of the reaction you may need to totally avoid a food, or just reduce the frequency you consume it. The foods tested are as follows – Cereals - Corn, Wheat, Gluten, Oat. Rice, Rye, Durum wheat Fish - Salmon, Trout, Prawn, Crab, Lobster, Mussel, Tuna, Haddock, Cod, Plaice Fruits – Apple, Blackcurrant, Grapefruit, Rockmelon, Watermelon, Olive, Orange, Lemon, Strawberry, Tomato Meat – Beef, Chicken, Lamb, Pork Dairy/Eggs – Cow’s milk, Whole Egg Nuts – Almond, Brazil Nut, Cashew Nut, Peanut, Walnut Vegetables/Legumes – Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrot, Celery, Cucumber, Leek, Pea, Lentil, Haricot Bean, Capsicum, Potato, Soy Bean Other – Cocoa Bean, Garlic, Ginger, Mushroom, Tea, Yeast You can make an appointment for this test at both our Alstonville and Lennox Head clinic, to be performed by a university trained practitioner. It is not claimable on your health fund and a referral from your GP is NOT required.</image:caption>

<image:title>Peter Wilson - PETER WILSON NATUROPATH Bachelor of Naturopathy</image:title>
<image:caption>Peter Wilson graduated from Southern Cross University in 2004 as a qualified Naturopath and has specialised in the treatment of Psoriasis, Eczema and Fungal infections over the past 15 years for all ages. Effective treatment of skin conditions requires working on contributing factors such as gut repair, helping the body deal with the effects of stressors, and identifying factors that are fuelling the inflammatory response in many skin conditions. Peter uses herbal medicines, practitioner-only nutritional medicines, homoeopathy and dietary ‘coaching’. He also makes topical ointments which are tailored to each case and don’t contain any harmful chemicals such as fragrances and preservatives. His ointments use specific carrier oils and essential oils which can reduce itching and inflammation as well as promoting the healing of the skin. The essential oils are acquired from reliable sources as there are many sub-optimal oils on the market that are ineffective and can sometimes worsen the condition. To discover the triggers of the skin conditions he often uses food intolerance testing, hair tissue mineral analysis and information from blood tests. A dietary analysis is also a key factor in treatments. Sometimes the discovery of the presence of heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium or lead among others are a significant factor in designing the treatment program for the client. One of the ‘fringe benefits’ of having skin symptoms is that it can be like the “canary in the mine” where it can indicate that other body systems such as liver function, gut function or nervous system among others are under threat and need corrective action. This corrective action might not have been carried out if it were not for the skin symptoms. Treating the skin symptoms naturopathically now may prevent other serious conditions developing in the long term. It is quite a common thought that you should conduct a detox program for skin conditions. However, preparatory work usually needs to be done before embarking on a ‘detox program’. Otherwise, such detoxes can make things worse. This type of prep work can include repairing the gut lining, supporting the nervous system, checking and treating for parasites, correcting gut motility, improving liver and gallbladder function. The treatment of Psoriasis, Eczema and other inflammatory skin conditions varies from case to case and needs to be tailored to the individual. Triggers vary from person to person and addressing these triggers is a necessary component of successful treatment. You can book to see Peter at the Lennox Head clinic on Wednesdays and Saturdays.</image:caption>
